On December 25, 2024, the first (2024) Pharmaceutical Equipment Advanced Seminar (hereinafter referred to as the "Advanced Seminar"), hosted by the China Pharmaceutical Equipment Industry Association, with the theme of "Setting Sail Overseas & Creating a Brighter Future," was successfully held in Shanghai. More than 80 people from 55 companies attended the seminar, including association leaders, invited guests, and chairmen and general managers of member companies.
Association Vice President He Zhizhen delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He first extended a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the guests and colleagues attending the Advanced Seminar on behalf of the association. He stated that "globalization" is a development strategy encouraged by the Chinese government, and the association's purpose in holding this Advanced Seminar is to help companies "go global" to explore international markets and promote the sustained and healthy development of the industry. He pointed out that the pharmaceutical equipment industry is currently facing unprecedented difficulties and challenges, more arduous, more challenging, and more complex and volatile than ever before. The market demand for pharmaceutical equipment is severely insufficient, the revenue of pharmaceutical machinery companies has severely declined, and "involutionary" competition has become a pain point and difficulty in the industry's development. "Going global" and "going international" to strive for greater and broader development space will be a good strategy to solve the industry's predicament and is also the inevitable trend of development for the pharmaceutical equipment industry. Finally, he emphasized that pharmaceutical equipment companies should strengthen communication and exchange, hoping that everyone will actively respond to the call of the "China Pharmaceutical Equipment Enterprises' Going Global Initiative," with a more open mind and more pragmatic actions, working together to go global, to achieve mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.
This Advanced Seminar was chaired by Wang Yajun, Secretary-General of the Association. Seven keynote speakers shared their achievements and experiences with everyone, discussing topics including Sino-US relations, Sino-European relations, China's macroeconomic trends, risk prevention in intellectual property law for Chinese companies going global, international sales practices, and the successful experiences and challenges faced by Chinese companies going global, jointly exploring the paths and strategies for the industry to "go global" and "go international."
Professor Xu Hongcai delivered a keynote speech titled "New Changes in International Relations and New Trends in the Chinese Economy." He discussed the external environment facing China, Sino-US relations, especially the new changes since Trump took office, Sino-European relations, the recently held Central Economic Work Conference, and analyzed the trends of China's macroeconomy and financial markets, as well as the opportunities, challenges, and coping strategies facing China.
Ms. Liu Xin delivered a keynote speech titled "Chinese Enterprises Going Global—Successful Experiences and Challenges in Enterprise's Global Strategy, and Protection of Overseas Intellectual Property Products." She first elaborated on the current situation, reasons, and framework of enterprises going global, as well as the challenges and coping strategies faced. She lectured on the basic knowledge of intellectual property rights in the process of going global, including risk identification, risk prevention, and risk response methods. Combining practical cases, she provided an in-depth analysis of relevant practical operation methods.
Zheng Xiaodong, Chairman of Dongfulong Technology Group Co., Ltd., recounted Dongfulong's "internationalization" development over the past two decades, progressing through five stages from the domestic market to the global stage. Through the dual-drive of "external internationalization" and "internal internationalization," the company promoted the comprehensive upgrading of its brand, technology, management, and services. In the process of internationalization, Dongfulong deeply realized that internationalization is not only a strategic choice but also a comprehensive practice of systematization, localization, and digitalization. At the same time, Dongfulong recognized the challenges faced by Chinese pharmaceutical equipment in the globalization process, such as insufficient technological originality and lack of high-end quality, and proposed strategies such as focusing on quality improvement, cultivating international talents, and creating valuable solutions to get rid of low-price competition and promote the global development of China's pharmaceutical equipment industry.
Jiang Pei, Senior Vice President of Sansong Life Science and General Manager of Shanghai Sansong Biotechnology Co., Ltd., shared his insights on the challenges and positioning of pharmaceutical equipment going global. He believes that the challenges of companies going global mainly focus on a more complex competitive environment, cross-cultural communication barriers, and the uncertainty of regulations, standards, and delivery costs in different countries. He pointed out that companies need to conduct thorough risk assessments, integrate internal and external resources, optimize the supply chain, and achieve localized operations to meet these challenges. Successful execution of overseas projects requires in-depth interpretation of project documents, meticulous advance planning, high-quality one-time delivery, strict schedule management, and the ability to exceed customer expectations. Through these measures, "Made in China" can be empowered.
He Zhizhen, Chairman of Chuangzhi Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd., shared his insights on internationalization. He pointed out that companies should first clarify their own positioning and, based on this, establish a professional foreign trade team, while also understanding and respecting local culture. He emphasized that the most important thing is to ensure the excellent quality of the product itself, strictly control quality, establish a complete documentation system, and effectively guide customer needs.
Zhu Qingguo, Deputy General Manager of Shandong Xinhua Medical Apparatus & Instruments Co., Ltd., and General Manager of the Pharmaceutical Technology Group, introduced the development history of Xinhua Medical and the production line layout of the Pharmaceutical Technology Group (business unit). Starting from the latest development trends in the pharmaceutical industry, he shared how domestic pharmaceutical machinery and equipment can go international, particularly mentioning the need to launch competitive products to achieve overseas expansion, adhering to the principle of "doing what we should and not doing what we shouldn't," and not launching all products indiscriminately. Mr. Zhu also emphasized the importance of open cooperation, advocating honesty, respecting sales channels, and suggesting striving for joint overseas expansion with pharmaceutical companies. He clearly pointed out that quality is more important than quantity, cooperation is more important than internal friction, and things should be done with a bottom line.
Bian Ce, Senior Vice President of Hong Kong Austar Group, conducted an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and challenges facing the Chinese pharmaceutical equipment industry in the process of going global. In terms of overseas strategies, he suggested that Chinese pharmaceutical equipment companies unswervingly implement a globalization strategy, entering overseas markets through various methods such as cooperative relationships, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions. He particularly mentioned that with the formal implementation of EU GMP Annex 1, the pharmaceutical industry will usher in a new round of industrial upgrading, providing a rare development opportunity for Chinese pharmaceutical equipment companies. He also analyzed the characteristics and challenges of different regional markets and called for the establishment of industry coordination mechanisms to avoid "involution spilling over." He called on the association to speak out to downstream Chinese pharmaceutical industries, promoting the domestic substitution of Chinese equipment. At the same time, he also called on large enterprises to help and support small enterprises, jointly promoting the internationalization process of Chinese pharmaceutical equipment.
In the on-site discussion session, the trainees actively asked questions about the problems encountered by enterprises in the process of going global, and the guests patiently answered them, sharing more valuable experiences and insights. During the breaks, there was also good interaction among the trainees.
After the guests finished their presentations, Du Xiaopeng, General Manager of Hunan Zhengzhong Pharmaceutical Machinery Co., Ltd., spoke on behalf of the participants. He spoke highly of the Advanced Seminar, believing that it was not only well-timed but also "clear in its objectives, prominent in its characteristics, and highly targeted." Specifically, the seminar's theme, "Going Global: Don't Go Global, and You'll Be Out," is strategic; the learning methods are diverse; the timing of the seminar closely follows the 20th Central Committee's Third Plenary Session and the 2024 Central Economic Work Conference, making it very timely; renowned scholars, experts, and experienced entrepreneurs were invited, making the teaching staff strong; and the conference organization was also very well done. This Advanced Seminar emphasizes the combination of theory and practice, the integration of macro-strategy and micro-tactics, benchmarking against first-class enterprises, focusing on the industry, adopting systems thinking, and having clear objectives, providing valuable opportunities for decision-makers to "refuel and recharge." He said that through learning, the trainees have gained a deep understanding of the urgent need for the domestic pharmaceutical equipment industry to find new opportunities in the international market; through expert explanations, they have a clearer grasp of the global pharmaceutical equipment market trends, increased their confidence in going global, and learned about legal risks and coping strategies in the process of going global.
Du Xiaopeng suggested that the Advanced Seminar be held regularly to continue building a platform for sharing information and exchanging experiences. At the same time, an overseas service system should be established to organize member units to "go out and see, and bring in and learn." It is believed that through everyone's joint efforts, China will surely be able to build itself from a major pharmaceutical equipment country into a strong pharmaceutical equipment country, setting sail in the international market and creating a brilliant future!
Finally, Wang Huyu, vice president of the association and chairman of Shanghai Hengyi Pharmaceutical Equipment Co., Ltd., on behalf of all member units of the advanced research class, issued the "China Pharmaceutical Equipment Enterprises' Going Global Initiative," calling on member units to work together, "set sail and create a better future," to seize opportunities, work together, and with a more open mind and more pragmatic actions, contribute wisdom and strength to promoting the internationalization process of China's pharmaceutical equipment industry! Together, let's write a new chapter for Chinese pharmaceutical equipment enterprises going global!
After the meeting, the association organized the advanced research class students to visit Dongfulong Technology Group Co., Ltd. Zheng Xiaodong, chairman of Dongfulong Technology Group, Zheng Xiaoyou, senior vice president, and Zheng Jinwang personally accompanied the visit and gave a detailed explanation. Everyone gained a lot and had in-depth exchanges and discussions with Dongfulong's executives on issues of concern, such as industry trends, technological innovation, and management practices. Through the visit, everyone learned the advanced management experience of leading enterprises, providing new ideas for the development of their own enterprises.
